Devotional: The Last Supper
As we wake up and have our morning coffee let’s remember, with great gratitude, the Lord’s sacrifice and what He has done for us!
The Lord’s supper happened on the first day of the Passover festival. The Passover festival was the Feast of Unleavened Bread and commemorated the story of Exodus. The Passover celebrated God freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. At the meal, Jesus told the disciples that one of them would betray Him. Each disciple asked, “Surely you do not mean me.” To which the Lord replied, “It is the one who dips his hand in the bowl with Me” The Lord said, “Woe to the man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born”. Jesus referred to Judas without naming him, offering him a chance to repent because He is just that good. He is SO loving! Judas bears the responsibility for his grievous wrongdoing, while Jesus’ crucifixion was necessary to fulfill God’s plan.
Jesus then gave the Passover meal a new meaning. He took, blessed, broke, and passed out the bread and cup. He said, “Take and eat; this is my body” (Matthew 26:26). After blessing the cup, He said, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:27-28). This underlines for us His great sacrifice on the cross, and when we receive, eat, and drink, we express our Trust in Him. Jesus “eagerly desired” (Luke 22:15) to have this meal with His disciples.

As I think about what Jesus was getting ready to face and how he welcomed it because it was God’s will, I am humbled! He lovingly sat around a table with His friends, knowing He was about to die a grotesque death and that one would betray Him, and another would deny Him, and He sat and ate in love offering forgiveness. So that you and I may have eternal life through His free gift of righteousness and great sacrifice.
